My father was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, and it was a shock to all of us because he really was in excellent shape. He ate healthy, he exercised on a regular basis, and we didn't know of anyone else in the family who had diabetes. We later found out that my father's uncle had diabetes and my father's sister also developed diabetes. Since my father was always very careful about his eating habits, it was probably not as difficult for him to adapt to the diabetes way of living. I think he actually started to enjoy learning more about what he was eating, keeping track of his carbs, and adjusting his insulin intake. At least it didn't seem to be a chore for him. I'm sure this is not the case for everyone. All of the sudden your life is changed forever, and the consequences of not following doctor's orders are extreme!
